The Ordinary Business Network

A community for service providers focused on becoming better not bigger.

At some point, you stopped Googling “how to make $5k” and started asking harder questions.

Am I crazy for turning down a $20k project last month because it didn’t fit? How do I make more money without building something I resent? I’m burning out on client relationships that feel too heavy, what do I do?

Those questions don’t get a lot of airtime in the online business world, where the goal is always more… more revenue, more clients, more team members, more everything. But that’s not the only way to run a business. And it’s definitely not the only way to run a good one.

You’ve been in this long enough that you already know what you don’t want.

You don’t want a team you didn’t ask for, a calendar that runs your life, or revenue that looks impressive and feels hollow. Knowing what you do want (and finding people who get it) is what we’re all about.

Our members are creatives, strategists, and service-based business owners somewhere in the $150k–$400k range, and have zero interest in chasing a million dollars just to say they did it. Some are making more than that. Some are making less.

The focus is: you’re building intentionally, you don’t care about a 7-figure trophy, and you care about doing good work.

This isn’t a place where you come to consume content. There’s nothing to watch, and no curriculum to finish. The value is the people.

You’ve been in this long enough to know that being solo is not a stepping stone. Most communities pretend you either want to be a solopreneur because you’re broke and desperate, or you secretly want to scale…. we’re neither.

How to be part of the Network

This is a down-to-earth community that replaces the hype-fueled $5k masterminds, noisy Facebook groups filled with beginners asking how to get their first client, and expensive recruitment agencies. Join the community and stay as long as it’s serving you. And twice a year, you can enroll in a mastermind.

Step 1: Join the Network

$197 $150/year (founding member rate!)

A capped Slack community of experienced service providers who are past the beginner phase and building something real. Members hire each other, find podcast guests, and build referral relationships.

What’s included:

  • Access to all community Slack channels
  • Two Slack chats per month
  • Ask the Expert calls + networking calls throughout the year (1-2 of each per quarter)
  • First access to live event and retreat tickets
  • Linked in the Ordinary Business directory
  • Exclusive discounts to services and industry tools (including Kit!)

Membership is currently capped at 200. Once we’re full, a waitlist opens.

Step 2: Join a 3-month mastermind

$150/month (if enrolled)

Twice a year, a handful of pods open for enrollment. Each one is a small, focused cohort — a group of people working on the same kinds of things, meeting regularly for three months, then wrapping up.

Each mastermind includes:

  • A small, capped cohort with less than 10 people
  • Monthly mastermind sessions (led by peers or Jess)
  • A dedicated Slack channel for your group
  • Real conversation on what’s working, what isn’t, what you’re actually trying to figure out

Choose a general pod or a topic-focused pod (topics rotate based on community needs).

You enroll for one cohort at a time. When it wraps up, you can re-enroll next time, try a different pod, or sit the next round out.

Pods will start in September. Enrollment is optional.

What’s included:

Ask the Expert Calls

You have enough places to watch webinars, so here… we’re going to have a chance to learn and talk from each other.

The Experts will all be people from within the community, no outsiders. 30-60 minute Q&A calls where you can ask the experts, get feedback, and learn from your peers about their expertise *and* also how they’re running their business.

You don’t need a massive following to do good work or deserve a seat at the table. You’ve been doing this long enough, we know you’re already an expert.

Mastermind Pods

You don’t have to join a pod if you don’t have the time or budget, but these 3-month pods are here to support you and whatever you’re currently focused on.

Each fall and spring, we’ll open up a few pods with a focus. There will be a “general” pod, but then you might see pods for podcasters, changing your offers, visibility, burnout, etc.

Slack Channel

Our Ordinary Slack channel is the place to chat and collaborate. We have two Slack chats per month (30-minute discussions on a focused topic).

Outside of that, you’re welcome to post ideas, questions, and opportunities! People have already been finding new team members, podcast guests, and friends in our Slack.

This probably isn’t for you if…

  • You’re looking for a course. There are no video modules, no homework, and zero worksheets here. If you need someone to tell you how to run your business, this room will feel empty. If you need peers to stress-test your ideas, it’ll feel like home.

  • You want a massive, buzzy community where you can lurk forever. We keep this capped at 200 on purpose. Small enough that people know each other, show up consistently, and actually respond when you post. If you want to disappear into a crowd, this isn’t it.

  • You’re just getting started. This community skews toward people with some runway behind them. If you’re still figuring out your offer or landing your first clients, there are better rooms for that stage.

  • You’re chasing 7 figures and want everyone around you doing the same. Nothing wrong with that goal, it’s just not what we’re optimizing for here. If building something sustainable is the point, you’ll fit right in.

Ready to join?

You don’t need a massive business, a big following, or a five-year plan to belong here. You just need to be building something real, doing it on your own terms, and want a room full of people doing the same.

When you join, you’ll get an email within 24 hours with your Slack invite.

FAQ

Why is the membership annual instead of monthly?

Because this isn’t a subscription you dip in and out of when you need something. An annual commitment means the people around you are in it for real, not just kicking the tires. When everyone’s bought in, the conversations are better and the trust builds faster.

What if I make more than $400k?

I’m not here to check your bank account and see how much you really make. If you align with the Ordinary vibe, you’re more than welcome to be here.

What if I join and it’s not for me?

We want an active, aligned room, and that means making sure you feel safe trying it out. If you log in, look around, and feel like it’s not the right space for you, just email us within your first 7 days. We’ll issue a full refund, no hoops or awkward conversations required.

Who exactly is in this community?

Solopreneurs who’ve been at it for a while — past the “how do I get my first client” phase and running real businesses. There are copywriters, designers, bookkeepers, social media managers, VAs, and so many more industries represented in our community.

I’ve paid for communities before and never used them. Why would this be different?

Probably because most communities are built around content and when you’re not in a learning mode, you stop showing up… you get overwhelmed, realize you’re not keeping up, and you stop paying. There’s no content here. Just people. The value is the room, and the room only works if people are in it, which is why we keep it small and capped.

What if I’m already in the free Ordinary Slack channel?

The free Slack will only be open to paid members after July 31—but everyone in there is invited to transition to the paid Network. You’ll keep the community you already know, plus get access to the Ask the Expert calls, mastermind pods, and exclusive discounts. Founding members get a special rate for year one.
